Asbestos - Frequently Asked Questions

Recent Google Reviews – What Our Customers Are Saying!

They were reasonably priced and had exceptional communication and customer service. When I needed to reschedule last-minute, they accommodated it and made it quick and easy. They called when they were on the way to give us a heads up, which was nice. During the appointment, the techs were polite and efficient. I would recommend using them and will likely book them again for our next furnace cleaning.

Mostly very good, but they did not tell me they needed a garbage bag, so just emptied one of mine. Also, had to request one of the men to put on mask to come close to me. They left everything very clean, I have used this company before and generally am pleased. They asked if I wanted some extra work and did it for a reasonable price. I wondered if when they cleaned the exhaust for the dryer there was something should have been done different as my first load in there came out with a HUGE amount of lint in the lint catcher, never had that before.

Hands down some of the best service we've received within any industry! *5 Stars All the Way!* ☺️ We've had our furnace, vents & A/C Coil cleaned by Alberta Furnace twice since moving into our home. They make the entire process extremely smooth & effortless. I scheduled with them via Facebook this time which was a breeze! They've always stayed true to quotes they've given us and their technicians are super professional. Can't recommend them enough!

Everything about this was GREAT !! Booking the service was so simple - followed by a phone call to confirm details and set the date for the next day ! I received a call in the morning to advise of the arrival time - Richie and Norsheady arrived exactly as scheduled - very nice gentlemen, so quick, quiet and efficient - the furnace and the dryer vent package is a good deal - the air in my house smells fresher already

The guys that came to the house were amazing. Very polite, professional and respectful. With everything going on they went through a covid protocol and I was very please with the service form them. The office staff was great when I booked my appointment. I was told they would call between 8 and 9 am to confirm the window they would be coming. I didn’t receive that call until 10:30 and when they called they were very short and the lady hung up on me while I was still talking. Not impressed as I had some questions, but the guys were able to assist me. It’s a good thing the guys were so amazing as they are what would bring me back to use this company.

I had my furnace cleaned beginning of May by Ha and Xianglong. They were very professional and very polite! They explained what they needed to do and the price of how much it will cost. It came to exactly what they quoted me and they did explain that it could go lower or higher. I would recommend them as they did a wonderful job, very polite, explained things. I am very happy with their service!!

I called and they were able to come the next day! Arnold and Lei were very courteous, professional, and efficient and I am very happy with having called Alberta Furnace Cleaning to clean my ducts and furnace. I was called ahead to confirm their window of arrival and feel like the air quality in my home is already better! Thank you!

I found the ad on Facebook that included all vents in the house. I prefer that type of inclusive pricing to one where it starts at $99 and you add more for each vent. So I booked it. As long as Alberta Furnace Cleaning has the all inclusive pricing, I will continue to use them. Also, the scheduling system worked great. I was able to get a Saturday appointment with no issues.

Wonderful experience with Alberta Furnace Cleaning. Guys showed up on time, ready to work. Very polite and professional. They got the job done well in a timely manner with very minimal mess. They even laid down mats so their shoes didn't get my floors dirty. Very impressed, would definitely use their services again.

I had my furnace cleaned this past weekend by Alberta Furnace. Not only did they respond quickly they gave me great price and had the job done in a timely manner. I had two great technicians (Lei and Andrew) that came and did an amazing job, as well as tell me about furnace care. They came with a great attitude and explaining the process as they went, allowing me the information about how things work. They followed up with a dryer vent cleaning (at a discount) and as well as a reusable filter for the furnace. (Which has been good so far).

We scheduled a full clean + dryer vent cleaning and everything was very professional! The lady who took my call and scheduled the booking was very friendly and had great customer service! The two gentlemen that came to do the cleaning were super friendly, respectful and very efficient. It did end up costing more than was quoted, only because we had way more vents than I even knew of! They were always transparent about that cost and that it might be more if they found more vents. We are very satisfied clients and would highly recommend their services. 🙂

Pros: The 2 technicians (Dillan & Edison) did a fantastic job. They were very thorough, and explained everything they were doing in detail. Throughout the appointment they offered various additional options/services that they were able to provide. Great job! Cons: I felt it was a little pricey. I knew the price before the actual appointment, but agreed to it because they were recommended by Furnace Solutions. However, the quality of work done was wonderful.

During every step of this process from booking, to confirming the appointments, to the techs showing up, this company has done amazing. Today I had Bendito and Mike as my technicians and they were quick, funny, informative, and knowledgeable. They genuinely cared about the work they were doing, keeping my home safe, ensuring that they kept me informed of the entire process, and were not afraid to let me follow them around to learn things. Both gentleman were happy to point out things they saw, or to watch for in future as well as make recommendations as to what I may want to look at in future. I was also impressed that your techs carried washable filters as this is something I have had a heck of a time finding for a reasonable price point. I will definitely use you again in future, and recommend to others.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation of the professionalism that the service technician (Andrew) exhibited during the inspection of our furnace and the cleaning of our heating ducts. The entire service was completed in a timely fashion with careful attention to ensure no interruption of our ongoing activities at the time. The technician was eager to provide answers to any questions that came up and made sure we were aware of what was all involved in our service package. A very enjoyable and satisfying experience! Thanks!!

This was the first time I had the furnace cleaned at this home. Benito and Thuy took the time to explain the process and answer the numerous questions I had to ensure that the cleaning was going to be thorough. Benito explained why they used a whip agitator instead of a brush (so it can pass through elbows), and the different processes used in cleaning upstairs versus downstairs vents. After the cleaning, Benito reviewed the findings: Our vents were pretty clean, old humidifier should be cleaned or removed, removal of filthy washable filter. In addition, Benito and Thuy were both friendly and kind to my house. I will be requesting them next time!

Andrew and his work partner we’re so very nice, very courteous, hard working and we’re very sweet to my 2 year old son. Andrew answered all my questions and knew what he was talking about. They went out of their way to fix things and clean things that were not part of their job like cleaning the little dryer vent duct inside my dryer and screwed in the duct tubing that wasn’t fastened into my wall correctly. They do a call back quality check which I love, kept my house clean and had something over my front door to only let the tube come in so the cold didn’t come in. Will always go with Alberta Furnace Cleaning. Thank you guys!!

Furnace Regular Maintenance

Furnace Regular Maintenance

Your furnace & ducts should be cleaned every 2 to 3 years. Factors that can impact your cleaning frequency include:

Where your home is located

  • Homes in dusty areas (near industrial parks, the city dump, farms, and construction) may have more dust and dirt in the air than average, which may mean you need to have your furnace & ducts cleaned more often.

A brand new home

  • Your furnace & ducts should be cleaned prior to you moving in. Check with your builder – most will have this done for you.
  • If your new home is in a new neighbourhood with a lot of construction, dirt & dust, your system may need to be cleaned again in as soon as a year.

Pets, smoke, allergies

  • These things can increase the dust & particles in the air or increase sensitivity to poor air quality.
  • If you find that your filter is getting very dirty every month when you check it, even if it’s been less than 2 years, we offer a free inspection to see if your system is in need of a cleaning with any dryer vent cleaning.

Your Furnace Filter

A clogged filter can block airflow and cause costly damage your furnace.

  • Check your furnace filter monthly & clean (permanent filters only) or change your filter every 1 to 3 months depending on level of soiling
  • Use the correct size of filter, and ensure your furnace filter fits securely – gaps or spaces reduce the filtration of your air and allow your furnace to get dirty more quickly.
  • If you have two or more furnaces, confirm you are using the right filter size for each – often homes with multiple furnaces will have a larger and smaller furnace with different filter sizes.

Having trouble finding the correct size of furnace filter for your furnace? We can help with standard and custom sized permanent and disposable filters and pre-filters – contact us.

Your Humidifier

  • Check humidifier for leaks every month when you check your furnace filter
  • Clean (permanent pads only) or replace humidifier pads before winter

Your HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator)

  • Vacuum, wash & dry HRV filters every two months during heating season

Not sure if you have an HRV? It is a large rectangular metal box in your furnace room. Stale or “old” air passes through, and heat from that air is captured to heat incoming cold, fresh air. It also helps to control condensation. There are filters in your HRV on both the intake and exhaust sides of the system.

HRV

Air Conditioning

  • Clean dust & debris from outside air conditioning unit in the spring, to ensure that function is not compromised
  • Cover your outside air conditioning unit in the winter when it’s not being used

Furnace Tune Up

  • Get a licensed heating professional to check and ensure that your system is running safely & efficiently every year
  • If you have air conditioning, you should make sure that the company you call is licensed to handle air conditioning as well.
  • If you have a concern about any gas appliance, including your furnace and hot water tank, ATCO Gas offers safety inspections

How to Prepare For Your

Cleaning Appointment

One or two days prior to your appointment, we will telephone you to confirm all of your details, including your cleaning address and your order. If you have any questions before then, please feel free to telephone us or contact us.

Before We Arrive

1) Find Your Vents

  • Please go through your home thoroughly and provide access to all of your vents – this includes the hot air vents (on the floor), and the cold air vents (on the wall).
  • Please check behind and move furniture if necessary to allow access to all vents. We will need access to every register in your home including those in bedrooms, bathrooms and closets.
  • At this time you can also do a quick count (don’t forget your basement roof vents) to come up with an estimate of your total vents. Remember that all vents, including hot, cold and those in the basement must be cleaned. Vents beyond the 10 in the package are $12.75 each.

2) Clear Around Vents & Furnace

  • Please move all lamps, plants and breakables in the immediate vicinity of your vents.
  • Furnace Room – please ensure that nothing is stored within 4 feet of your furnace and hot water tank.
  • Your furnace must be fully accessible for our cleaning with several feet clear in front – if you are not sure about the accessibility of your furnace, please let us know when we telephone to confirm your appointment.

3) Check for Asbestos (Homes Over 30 Years Old)

  • If you suspect that your home’s heating system may have asbestos tape or insulation, please go to our Asbestos FAQ.

Day of Cleaning

1) Time

  • Your appointment will be between 8 AM & 5 PM. We will telephone you by 10:30 AM with your technicians arrival time.

2) Notice/Reminder

  • If you need notice to get home, please let us know in advance and we can call when we are 30 minutes away to let you get home.

3) Parking

  • Please ensure there is legal, paved parking available within 30 feet of the entrance of your home.

4) Pets

  • Our equipment is loud and alarming for your furry friends, and the door will be partially open throughout the cleaning.
  • Please plan to have a secure place for your pets for the duration of the cleaning.

5) Payment

  • We accept Debit, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Asbestos FAQ

Asbestos FAQ

Q: How can I tell if my home has asbestos?

A: Asbestos was used in buildings from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. If your home was constructed during that time, it is possible that asbestos has been used in insulating or in insulative tape. You can look online for more information about how to identify asbestos in your home if you suspect it may be present.

Q: You cleaned my system before and did not have concerns, why can you not clean it now?

A: Alberta Furnace Cleaning is committed to the health and safety of our customers and staff. As a part of this commitment, we are undergoing COR certification, which is an intensive, safety focused certification program. In going through this process, asbestos has been identified as a health and safety concern, and we have recently developed a policy to properly manage this concern.

Q: Why can’t you just remove asbestos tape, or cover it up?

A: Asbestos must be properly contained and/or disposed of according to government regulations. Our staff and procedures are not qualified asbestos abatement and removal personnel, and therefore cannot do this for you.

Q: How could cleaning my system with asbestos tape or insulation be a health concern?

A: Asbestos becomes dangerous when it becomes friable (easily crumbles and releases fibers). Due to the aging of asbestos building materials, there is a high possibility that this could happen when our equipment puts pressure on your heating system. Due to this possibility and for your health and safety, we have a zero tolerance policy for asbestos.

Q: What should I do once Alberta Furnace Cleaning has informed me that asbestos is suspected?

A: We do not have a referral for an abatement company, but we recommend you search out a reputable, qualified company to assess your home – they will be found under the term “asbestos abatement”. Once the concerned area has been investigated and/or the asbestos removed, go online or call us to schedule your furnace and duct cleaning service. At the time of booking, please email/fax us the official asbestos documentation.
